Relationship between drug company funding and outcomes of clinical psychiatric research
Conclusions.
These data indicate an association between pharmaceutical industry funding of clinical studies and positive outcomes of those studies. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this relationship.
Factors Associated with Findings of Published Trials of Drug–Drug Comparisons: Why Some Statins Appear More Efficacious than Others
Conclusions
RCTs of head-to-head comparisons of statins with other drugs are more likely to report results and conclusions favoring the sponsor's product compared to the comparator drug. This bias in drug–drug comparison trials should be considered when making decisions regarding drug choice.

How could changes in diet explain changes in coronary heart disease mortality in Spain? The Spanish paradox
# A study published in 1995 noted that heart disease deaths in Spain from 1966-1990 dropped by 25% for men and by 34% in women.(1) The study published a table which indicated that between 1964 and 1991:
# bread consumption fell by 55%,
# rice consumption fell by 35%,
# and potato consumption fell by 53%.

At the same time consumption of
# beef went up 96%,
# pork went up by 382%,
# poultry was up by 312%,
# and full-cream milk went up by 73%.

Stress, obesity signals found

In a series of experiments on mice, researchers claimed Sunday that a biological switch can promote fat growth in chronically stressed animals that eat the equivalent of a junk-food diet.

Не знам защо го намират за толкова революционно откритие...

Soft Drinks Linked To Heart Disease Via Metabolic Syndrome

Употребата на безалкохолни напитки се свързва с повишен риск от сърдечно-съдови заболявания. Става дума за сладки напитки, като няма голямо значение дали са със захар или изкуствени "диетични" подсладители.

A new US study has found that drinking more than one soft drink a day, whether regular or diet, may be linked to an increased risk of developing heart disease, via an increase in metabolic syndrome, a group of characteristics like excess girth, high blood pressure, and other factors that increase the chances of getting diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

The researchers said it was important to realize that these are just theories, and their study had only found a link between soft drinks and metabolic syndrome, it had not established that one causes the other.

T M McKeever, S A Lewis, P A Cassano, M Ocké, P Burney, J Britton, H A Smit. The relation between dietary intake of individual fatty acids, FEV1 and respiratory disease in Dutch adults. Thorax 2008;63:208-214
Abstract

Background: A reduced dietary intake of n-3 fatty acids, in association with increased n-6 fatty acid intake, has been proposed as a potential aetiological factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. However, the relative importance of individual fatty acids within the n-3 and n-6 categories on this effect has not been widely investigated. We have studied the relation between individual fatty acid intakes, lung function and self-reported respiratory symptoms and diagnoses in a representative sample of more than 13 000 Dutch adults.

Methods: Intake of individual fatty acids was estimated by a food frequency questionnaire and analysed in relation to measures of forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and to questionnaire reported wheeze, asthma and COPD symptoms.

Results: After adjusting for confounding, we found no protective association between individual n-3 fatty acid intakes and FEV1. Higher intakes of some n-6 fatty acids were associated with lower FEV1, this effect being most marked for c22:4 n-6 docosatetraenoic acid (reduction in FEV1 between the highest and lowest quintile of intake 54.5 ml (95% CI –81.6 to –27.4)). Most of the n-6 fatty acid effects interacted significantly with smoking, their effects being strongest in current smokers. Individual n-3 fatty acid intakes were generally associated with a higher risk of wheeze in the past year, but otherwise there was little or no association between fatty acid intake and wheeze, doctor diagnosed asthma or other respiratory symptoms.

Conclusions: A high intake of n-3 fatty acids does not appear to protect against COPD or asthma, but a high intake of several n-6 fatty acids is associated with a significant reduction in FEV1, particularly in smokers. These findings indicate that high dietary intake of n-6 fatty acids, rather than reduced n-3 intake, may have an adverse effect on lung health.
