"The brain consumes about 20% of the energy expendiure of the body. It does so regardless of level of mental activity. It uses glucose only, whereas muscles are able to use fat for energy. When glucose levels get below a critical point (usually about 50 mg/100ml) peoples' cognitive abilities go down (to the point of unconsciousness or seizure if it gets low enough). Glucose is used by muscles and the brain. Muscles have their own stores of glycogen which can be converted to glucose quickly on the spot. The brain has no stores and depends on the liver and pancreas to maintain blood levels at the proper range (usually 80-200). "
